Berton Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Available from the mill off-licence at the wallet friendly price of 12.95 I find it hard to fault this wine. A deep purple in appearance, the wine displays an impressive nose of wild blackberry, eucalyptus and cinnamon from the oak.. On the palate it is an explosion of blackberry fruits, followed by a little vegetal and firm tannins.

I would highly recommend this for someone who enjoys new world Cabernet's but wants to try something a little different. The reason for this is that the region in question, Coonawarra is considered cool climate (as cool as can be for the land down under). The cooler aspect to the climate coupled with the mineral laden soils of the region give Cabernets from this stretch of the woods the conditions to emulate Bordeaux, but at a nice price and good level of fruit.

Try with lamb or a strong cheese.
